Your home is supposed to be where you go to unwind, relax, and regroup. It is not intended to exist only as a place for your stuff to clutter together and drive you insane. As life happens, most people take on more possessions than they know what to do with, but there is a way to cut back on the amount of clutter in your space without becoming a shut-in. In fact, there are only three simple rules to follow.

  1. Use the One-Year Rule

Clutter happens in our homes and offices because we forget how to get rid of things we no longer need. In an effort to plan for the unpredictable side of life, some people hoard items until their spaces are cluttered with possessions intended for a rainy day. To declutter your space, use the one-year rule. It states that if you haven’t used an item in a year or more, put it somewhere else or get rid of it. In short, if you do not intend on utilizing something for quite some time, it needs to go into long-term storage and get out of your face.

  1. Invest in Separate Storage

Now, in order for any of the previously mentioned to happen the way it should, you need to have access to some sort of storage space. Whether the space be your garage and shed or an off-property unit doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have somewhere for your keepsakes and reusable possessions to go so that they are not cluttering your home and office. If an extra storage spot is not in the budget, try investing in small storage containers. You can label them and have everything you want to keep in a designated area of the house.

  1. Do a Little Each Day

Clutter happens quickly, especially for a person who leads a busy life. However, the only way that you will be able to cut down on the clutter in your space is if you do a little towards organizing it each day. Take five to ten minutes in the morning or evening to sort out the possessions you need to keep and the ones you could do without. If they belong in long-term storage, you already have a spot for that so no worries there. Decluttering can be easy if you put your best foot forward and take the appropriate steps towards keeping everything under wraps.
