These are the main things you are going to want to consider if you’re planning to clean your yard this spring:
What is Yard Waste?
Yard waste, also known as vegetative waste, is defined by Encyclopedia.com as waste that comes from “outdoor residential settings.” Because most of this waste is compostable due to its vegetative nature, it is also considered “green waste.” Yard waste is typically comprised of tree trimmings, leaves and grass clippings.
It’s important to note that what is considered yard waste by definition is not always eligible for pickup as outlined by particular cities.
For example, the City of Toronto does not accept grass clippings as yard waste for pickup — even though these clippings are considered vegetative waste by definition.
What Does Your City Accept as Yard Waste?
Most cities provide yard waste pickup services or accessible drop of depots — but these come with a list of conditions. In Ottawa, for example, your yard waste must be put in a compostable paper bag and weigh no more than 33 lbs. There are also additional rules regarding how the bag is tied.
The City of Ottawa’s specific yard waste guidelines include:
- Branches must be tied in bundles that don’t exceed 2 ft in width and 4 ft in length
- Branches can’t be longer than 10 cm in diameter
- No grass clippings
- Must be packaged in a garbage can, cardboard boxes or compostable paper yard waste bags
- No tree cuttings that exceed a diameter of 10 cm.
- No logs, stumps, rocks, earth, sod etc.
If you have logs, stumps etc. to dispose of, Capital Junk is prepared to haul this waste away and dispose of it properly.
Be aware that all cities have specific regulations when it comes to yard waste pickup. The City of Toronto, for example, boasts a yard waste program that allows it to divert around 80,000 tonnes of yard waste from the landfill annually. Toronto yard waste pickup will accept:
- Stumps, trunks and tree limbs
- Corn Stalks
- Plant materials
However, there are things that the city does not accept as yard waste:
- Grass clippings
It can be draining to sort through your yard waste to figure out what the city will take and what it won’t. We are happy to come to pick up your yard waste and sort through it ourselves to ensure everything gets disposed of properly.
What Tools You Need
You can’t exactly wake up and decide that you’re going to clean your yard that day — there is some preparation involved. After all, there are certain resources you will require to clean your yard effectively. These are the tools that are necessary to help you clean up your yard:
- Hedge trimmer
You’re going to want to own or rent some of these tools to make the process of accumulating your yard waste a lot easier — because getting it all together is the first hurdle.
Wait For Snow & Ice to Melt
What’s the point in starting to clean up your yard if there are still snow and ice patches in the way? Let everything melt so that you can fully assess any damage that winter might have caused your yard. This way you can restore your yard before really getting into deep cleaning.
Be strategic about your yard waste by getting everything done at once. If you want to prune your greenery to get rid of any dead branches from shrubs and trees, this will contribute to your yard waste.
Before enlisting the help of junk removal, be sure to consolidate your waste. This will also maximize the cleanliness of your yard and the efficiency of your yard cleanup.
Bagster® Pickup & Bin Rental
You can always be proactive and fill a Bagster® with your garden and yard waste on your own. That said, it can be tricky to get your Bagster® picked up — but that’s where we come in. We offer Bagster® pick up services and bin rental.
Just leave the dirty job of hauling your waste away and disposing of it to us.
As much as using the Bagster® is an efficient way to clean up your yard and manage your waste, it only can hold 3 cubic yards of waste. If you project that you will exceed that limit, you can always get in touch for a bin rental.
Dispose of Debris
If you are getting your yard ready for spring gardening, you’re going to want to get rid of debris like fallen branches, leaves, weeds and twigs. After all, since heavy winds cause and carry debris, winter is notorious for taking a toll on your trees.
At Capital Junk, we are prepared to come and haul away all of your debris away to make sure it is disposed of properly. Remember, if you let debris sit after the winter, it can halt the growth of new, healthy grass and other landscaped greenery.
Yard Waste is Green Waste!
It’s not like you can just toss all your yard waste in the garbage — this debris is compostable, so carelessly throwing it away is environmentally irresponsible. It’s important to have the environment in mind when you get rid of your yard waste, especially because yard waste can help landfills break down other organic materials through composting.
When you use Capital Junk’s yard waste removal services, you can rest easy knowing that we will make sure all of your waste is correctly disposed of whether we recycle it or compost it.
Whatever we collect from you ends up at our recycling center where we sort through it all to ensure that everything we take is diverted and disposed of properly.
You Don’t Have to do it Alone!
It can be time-consuming and labour intensive to rely on regular garbage collection to get rid of your collected yard waste — especially considering that a lot of the time you’ll have a lot more than one green bin worth of yard waste.
You don’t have to get rid of your yard waste all by yourself — Capital Junk offers yard waste removal services to make sure your debris is responsibly removed. We are equipped to get rid of your stumps, grass, leaves, twigs and branches — and we will make sure that anything that can be re-used or composted is diverted.
Not only are we an environmentally responsible choice, but we are cost-effective too. We will only charge you based on how much room your yard waste takes up in our truck. Be sure to make an appointment, and we’ll give you a two-hour time slot to expect us — we’ll give you a heads up call 15 minutes before we arrive.
We’ll give you a quote upfront and will get started removing your yard waste once you give us the go-ahead.
